General documentation tips. Cover depends on your policy wording: sudden backups are treated differently from gradual pipe failures and wear and tear.

Document

Photos and short video of any overflow, backup or damage before anything is cleaned up.
Note which fixtures were affected, when it started and whether a cleanout or inspection chamber showed sewage.
Keep receipts for emergency clearing, drying and anything you replace.

Claim

Notify your insurer as your policy requires. A drain cleaning provider can describe technical findings; they do not replace your claim or give legal advice.
